New General Manager
Welcome Andy, B.I.G’s new General Manager.
Andy joined the team earlier this year and is responsible for B.I.G across Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia. He brings his extensive Sales and Management experience within the lighting industry, as well as his Scottish sense of humour. Throughout Andy’s career, his greatest accomplishment is the development of individuals he has mentored and the camaraderie he has helped promote within the organisations he has worked alongside.
Can you tell me about your career so far?
I have been in lighting for as long as I can remember, starting off as an internal sales coordinator working for Thorn Lighting in Larkhall, Scotland, 6 months later I was out on the road and the proud owner of a Talbot Horizon Company car, yikes!
Since then, I have been privileged enough to work with some of the most inspiring people in the industry, as well as some of the best lighting manufacturers, in various locations around the world, culminating here in Australia with WE-EF and now the Buckford Illumination Group.
What made you decide to make the move to join Buckford?
I had been working in a partnership with Buckford over the previous 5 or 6 years and admired their work ethic, growth aspirations and team spirit. When the prospect arose to join them, I leapt at the opportunity.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I don’t think there is any such thing as a typical day, that’s part of the enjoyment of the role, it’s extremely wide and varied.
What’s the most inspiring part of your job?
It may sound like a cliché, but it must be the interaction with the team and working together to provide solutions for our customers.
What do you enjoy doing during your spare time?
Playing golf badly, riding my Africa Twin and even a bit of gardening.
What is something funny or surprising about yourself?
1. I’m not actually as grumpy as I let people believe!
2. It surprises me that my sarcastic Scottish sense of humour hasn’t gotten me into more trouble!
What animal do you think most matches your personality?
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Once you realise that you are a hapless *^^*, you won’t take yourself so seriously!
What are the values that drive you?
Trust, empathy, and integrity.
